This is probably the closest hotel to the temples but a 10 minute cab ride from the station. It is a historic landmark being the oldest western style hotel in Japan and the walls are decorated with photos of past guests (Ulysses S Grant, Indira Gandhi, Eisenhower). In consequence, it's a rabbit warren of corridors and levels. I requested a quiet room with an open view and that is exactly what I got. It was in a connected annex maybe some 40 years old, but perfect for a quiet stay. The room was very large, with unusually a full length bath, and a Nespresso machine. The bar is very very atmospheric and has a massive selection of whiskies (Scotch and Japanese). Breakfast is available as either Japanese or Western. The latter is extremely well done and very welcome.

Excellent customer service & hospitality! Delicious in-house bakery, beautifully preserved historic hotel with interesting exhibits, classical fine dining restaurant with great food, view, & decor, beautiful garden and walking path along the river, when I wanted to go to an onsen for an evening soak the front desk staff went out of her way to help me book a reservation close by, easy to communicate in with English, close to Shinkyo Bridge, Toshogu Temple, and the main thoroughfare with shops and restaurants. This is a special hotel and the people who work here are equally special, taking pride and great care in what they do.

Beautiful location to visit Toshogu shrine and other parts of Nikko. Although it's historical hotel with rich stories over 150 years, the room we stayed was annex which is recently renovated keeping its original ambience but functional modern equipement. Ceiling height is quite high and room is quite spacious. Hospitality and service quality is guaranteed with convenient location, 10mn from Tobu Nikko station by either taxi or hotel shuttle bus. Since they have 3 hotels in Nikko area, I would try another 2 equipped Onsen, hot spring, probably Chuzenji one located lake sure.

This property reminded us of an old national park hotel in the U.S. We enjoyed the trail with the provided walking sticks down to the river. The location to historic temples and shrines and the access to the commercial areas on either side, as well as to the local bus stop that takes you up to the lake and waterfall could not be better. The staff is lovely and and provide top notch service. The service at breakfast and dinner as well as the delicious multi course meals help you relax and enjoy the beauty of this special place.

The staff at the hotel were amazing. Chasing after us to give us complimentary umbrellas in the rain, sending on my son's plushy toy to our next hotel when it caught up in the bedclothes. The staff spoke good English and were very patient, accommodating, kind and sincere. The hotel is very grand and exceptionally close to the Tonogawa shrine, but the hotel staff are what made this hotel exceptional for us.
